English Premier League
Result: Liverpool 3-1 Arsenal
Date: 28 September 2020
Liverpool maintained their perfect start to the Premier League season with a 3-1 victory over Arsenal at Anfield on Monday night.
The Reds were without the services of off-season signing Thiago Alcantara and Jordan Henderson while Alisson Becker was passed fit to start in goals.
Jurgen Klopp’s took the initative early on, which nearly resulted in the opening goal on 15 minutes when Trent Alexander-Arnold picked out Sadio Mane who saw his first-time effort saved by Bernd Leno.
It was the visitors who broke the deadlock just minutes after the Reds hit the woodwork as Andrew Robertson’s error in the area allowed Alexandre Lacazette to fire home on 25 minutes.
The Reds weren’t behind for too long though as Mane slotted into an empty two at the far post minutes later after Salah’s initial effort was saved by Leno.
Robertson made up for his earlier error as the full-back got on the end of Alexander-Arnold’s cross to poke beyond the on-rushing Leno to put the Reds ahead.
It was more of the same in the second half, but the visitors squandered a good chance to pull level on 62 minutes when Lacazette was denied by Alisson in a one-on-one scenario.
That proved to be Lacazette’s final big moment as he made way for Eddie Nketiah in the 73rd minute, with Mikel Arteta pushing for the equaliser.
Diogo Jota nearly put the game out of reach for the Gunners shortly after coming on for Mane but his curling effort from the ege of the box sailed just wide.
Jota did get his reward on 87 minutes as he marked league debut with a clinical volley from the edge of the box to seal three points for the defending champions.
