Springbok Showdown: Rassie Erasmus working remotely due to health reasons

SA Rugby’s director of rugby Rassie Erasmus remains in isolation and will not be with Team Green in their build-up to Saturday’s “Springbok Showdown” against Team Gold at Newlands.

The rugby governing body announced via a press statement on Monday that Erasmus would continue to work remotely due to a pre-existing health condition.

SA Rugby said the decision was made to minimise the 2019 World Cup-winning coach’s risk during the Covid-19 pandemic.

He will also not attend Saturday’s match.

In 2018, Erasmus was diagnosed with a rare condition that causes inflammation of the blood vessels including in the throat and lungs, which increases vulnerability to the impact of a potential Covid-19 infection.

“The condition is managed but until all risk is eliminated, Erasmus will continue to work remotely,” the statement read.

Springbok assistant coach Mzwandile Stick will coach Team Green, while Deon Davids will coach Team Gold.

Erasmus (Green) and Springbok head coach Jacques Nienaber (Gold) are acting as team commissioners.
