“I Just Called to Say I Love You” is the perfect song for 2020

The song is about being away from the one you love for an extended period and missing out on all the holidays and events the year has to offer. Whether on the road or traveling, possibly working overtime, the song is an ode to those who just want to let someone know they’re thinking about them.

But in todays context, under quarantines, social distancing and cancelled happenings, Stevie Wonder’s “I Just Called to Say I Love You” sounds entirely different. As he runs down the list of things that wont be happening that year, it sounds almost apocalyptic and desperate. As if he might not ever get the chance to see the people he’s calling again:
