Whether their favourite product was Super 12, Super 14, Super 15 or even Super 10, most South African rugby lovers would agree that, at some point at least, Super Rugby was the pinnacle of the sport at franchise and club level.
The rivalries that South Africans have historically enjoyed with their hemisphere neighbours in New Zealand and Australia reach fever pitch whenever the Springboks play against the All Blacks and Wallabies, but over the last 24 years Super Rugby has consistently played its part in quenching that thirst.
Now, a product that has been one of the most familiar features of South African rugby for almost the entirety of democracy has come to a sudden and abrupt end.
