Pitso’s Downs Replacement Revealed

Siya sources have indicated to the crew that Mamelodi Sundowns appear to have made a decision on who will replace Pitso Mosimane.

The club confirmed the shock resignation of its most successful coach to date on Wednesday, with the former Bafana Bafana mentor leaving the Tshwane outfit – despite recently signing a four year contract – to take over a similar role at Al Ahly.

In the statement informing the public of Mosimane’s abrupt departure, owner and president Patrice Motsepe also added that further announcement would be made regarding who takes over from ‘Jingles’.

Now, the Siya crew has been led to believe that Manqoba Mnqgithi and Rulani Mokwena, who were assistant coaches to Mosimane, are expected to be appointed as co-coaches and this would not be the first time Sundowns go this route.

The mining magnate tasked Neil Tovey and Miguel Gamondi with being joint coaches in 2006 when Angel Cappa’s stint proved a disaster, and the duo went on to win the championship, but were not given the job permanently.

Mosimane had asked Mokwena to join him on his Egypt project, but the young tactician will remain at Chloorkop and now looks set for another huge responsibility in the Downs dugout, similarly to how he was elevated to being the interim coach at Orlando Pirates after Micho Sredojevic quit the Buccaneers in August last year.

Mokwena was in charge of 15 games at Pirates before he was seconded to Chippa United for the remainder of his contract with the Soweto giants.

In July, the Siya crew broke the news of his return to Sundowns as Mosimane’s assistant, rejoining ‘Jingles’ and Mnqgithi, who has been at the club since February 2014.

The duo both recently signed four-year contracts at the club.
