R.I.P Eddie Van Halen

Another one of my guitar heroes is gone. Eddie Van Halen lost his battle with cancer this morning at the age of 65.

The first time I saw [Van Halen](https://www.facebook.com/VanHalen/?__cft__[0]=AZWP-hpbJ43ex74YVMJJwWm8YjwAttjrw18icdzCgVzPZ-K4yyOwJBchKHGhAorWBdjiefvYm5YmA4RFm_SZOpBsDHIPeR00nMlw_jK4q_VOp0Y-7tLPZrLdY4heYDDkydDvDOsJrlKtzYX_5bvzNDCb&__tn__=kK-R) was at the first Farm Aid at U of I in Champaign-Urbana in 1985. I have then seen them about a dozen other times after that. I am also glad that I went to see him on his last tour in 2015. I got to meet Eddie once. It was briefly after the For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge show at The World Music Theater in Tinley Park. He couldn’t talk since he had to catch a plane with his wife at the time, Valerie Bertinelli. However, he gave me one of his guitar picks which has the F.U.C.K. logo on it. It is one of my prized guitar picks in my collection.

He is definitely one of the guitar players who advanced the instrument and Rock ‘n’ Roll. “I don’t know shit about scales or music theory,” he told Rolling Stone in 1980. “I don’t want to be seen as the fastest guitar in town, ready and willing to gun down the competition. All I know is that rock & roll guitar, like blues guitar, should be melody, speed, and taste, but more important, it should have emotion. I just want my guitar playing to make people feel something: happy, sad, even horny.”

Here are my Top 10 Van Halen songs:

10. “Why Can’t This Be Love”
9. “Summer Nights”
8. “Finish What You Started”
7. “Hot for Teacher”
6. “Dreams”
5. “Panama”
4. “Right Now”
3. “Unchained”
2. “Runnin’ with the Devil”
1. “Eruption”/”You Really Got Me” (I consider this one song as they are always played together)Chi
