Questions About MIDI

Hey there! I’m not sure if this is the right place to post this, but anyways: I just got a PX-100 pian, and I noticed there’s MIDI jacks. That got me thinking that I could use that to get some different sounds and stuff using that. However, I’ve got no clue how to go about doing this. First off, what type of cable should I use? I’m trying to plug it into my laptop and use some software to change sounds and things like that, and I’m not sure what cable would let me do that. Second, I’m wondering what software would work, and if I can do the things I’ve mentioned at all. I’d like to have the piano muted, and hear it through the laptop. I want to change the sound to synth like noises and possibly other sounds (tones?) I hope I’m not asking too much, but I hope someone can help me with this. Thanks.
