How is electronic metal music made?

For an example of what I’m talking about, I was thinking of stuff like Voician, Blue Stahli, and this band I just discovered called MORBID M3CHANICS.
I’m asking this, because I would be interested in trying this myself. I have a 2-year degree in programming, and have been tinkering with making a music synthesizer. What I know so far is pretty basic; I just know how to make a program produce sine, square, triangle, and sawtooth waves. I’ve only looked into saving the resulting sound files as .wav files, but I may have a way to save the things in other file formats if need be. Honestly, I doubt such a simple synthesizer would be able to produce the sounds I hear in these electronic metal bands. I do know of chiptune, but I’ve never really been that interested in that. That honestly is probably more the type of music I could seriously expect to produce with my cheap program.
So, how do they actually make this music? They’re obviously not using acoustic instruments. Where are they getting the synthesizers to make these sounds? And is it reasonable that I could make one for myself with just a 2-year degree? Keep in mind, what I’m doing wasn’t technically a part of my degree; I was actually dabbling in it so I could make sound effects for my games (which are mostly just clones of really old 8-bit games). I wasn’t ever really considering making real music with a program.
