Almost 600,000 new COVID-19 cases a day globally
The world is continuing to experience nearly 600,000 new coronavirus infections a day as the virus continues its autumn surge in the northern hemisphere.
The United States has reported more than 120,000 new cases on Friday, a national record since the pandemic began.
The US death toll now stands at more than 236,000.
In Europe the post-summer surge continues with locked-down France also reporting its highest daily total of more than 60,000 new cases.
France also suffered more than 800 deaths yesterday. Cases are soaring in Poland, Russia and the UK, and Italy was another nation to post a daily new infection record yesterday, with more than 34,000.
So although things appear to be under control here in Australia, the same clearly cannot be said of other parts of the world.
