Critically low O and B+ blood stock level in the Western Cape
The Western Cape Blood Service (WCBS) is appealing to all eligible donors to donate blood as blood stocks are critically low. “We always aim to have a blood supply of 5-days. Currently there is a critical shortage in the O blood groups as well as the B+ blood group; we only have a 1-day supply in these respective blood groups”, says Marike Gevers, Public Relations Manager at WCBS. “Blood stocks tend to decline during winter months, as people suffer from colds and flu and subsequently cannot donate blood”, Gevers added.
We would like to encourage all healthy existing and potential blood donors who fulfil the basic donor criteria to donate blood this winter and save up to 3 lives with 1 donation. To help keep you warm during the winter months, we are launching our winter sock campaign. Each donor who successfully donates a unit of blood in May, June, July and August will receive a pair of socks. Each month you will see a different Western Cape inspired sock design, so make sure you get your pair and rock your socks, knowing you made a difference.
If you are between the ages of 16 and 75, weigh 50kg or more, are in good general health, lead a safe sexual lifestyle and would like to save three lives in just 30 minutes, you should be able to donate. This winter, we know we make the perfect pair, donate blood.
