Cape Town Funny Festival – a platform for the next big comic star

The City of Cape Town is this year celebrating over a decade of supporting the Jive Cape Town Funny Festival. The festival will run a month-long programme at the Baxter Theatre featuring some of the best local and international comedy acts.

The Jive Cape Town Funny Festival officially kicked off its 2022 edition this week with a stellar line-up including veteran comedian Alan Commitie, Sifiso Nene, Tats Nkonzo and the UK’s Graeme Mathews.

Arlene Petersen, Ismail Moses and Japanese comedian Yosuke Ikeda will also keep audiences in stitches for the festival run until 3 July 2022.

Nkosinathi Maki, winner of this year’s Jive Funny Championship, will also take to the main stage at the Cape Town Funny Festival.

The championship is the festival’s development campaign aimed at providing a stepping-stone for an undiscovered comedian’s career.

The emerging comedians went through a tough competition over the last four weeks to determine the winner.

Maki beat out 59 other hopeful comedians who entered the championship with the hope of earning themselves a slot on the Jive Cape Town Funny Festival stage.

‘Cape Town is a city with an abundance of undiscovered talent. One of the key objectives of the City’s partnership with the Cape Town Funny Festival is to provide up and coming comedians with a platform where they can showcase their abilities with the hope that they can be the next big comedic star.

‘For this reason, the Jive Funny Championship is a very crucial component of the festival and we are grateful that the event is providing opportunities for the undiscovered talent in our city,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.

Since its inception in 1997, the Jive Cape Town Funny Festival has provided a stage for hundreds of local and international comedians to keep audiences entertained during the cold winter months.

The festival has entertained more than 115 000 people between 2014 and 2019, when it hosted its last show before Covid-19.

With 30 scheduled shows for this year, the festival will continue the tradition this year at the Baxter Theatre after a two-year hiatus.
