DA ‘day of action’ against electricity price increase

A national day of action to oppose Eskom’s proposed electricity tariff increase is currently underway in South Africa, arranged by The Democratic Alliance (DA).

The party said that it would be holding a ‘day of action’ across all nine provinces to fight the proposed 36% increase, which still has to be granted by the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA).

The DA’s Energy spokesperson, Kevin Mileham, said this mass action was being organised ahead of the urgent debate in Parliament scheduled for tomorrow.

Eskom wants to hike your electricity bill in the middle of a cost of living crisis. This hike will force millions to make an impossible choice between food and electricity. We refuse to accept a future where electricity is unaffordable for the average household,” the party said.

“Adding insult to injury, Eskom has been given a green light to overcharge you next year, to recover revenue shortfalls from this year. The DA is undertaking an all-out assault on Eskom’s upcoming tariff hikes, and against the way electricity hikes are set, going forward”.
