Minister of Sport, Arts, and Culture Gayton McKenzie has expressed his immense pride and excitement upon hearing the news of The Last Ranger’s nomination for an Academy Award.
The South African film, directed by Cindy Lee, is up for Best Live Action Short Film at the 97th Academy Awards, set to take place in March 2025.
According to the department, the isiXhosa-language film is inspired by real events from South Africa’s Eastern Cape. It tells the gripping story of Thandi, a rhino who miraculously survived a poaching attack at the Kariega Game Reserve, and the courageous woman who fought relentlessly to protect wildlife in the face of danger.
The Last Ranger serves as a poignant tribute to the resilience of wildlife and the tireless dedication of conservationists working to preserve our natural heritage. The film boasts outstanding performances from Avumile Qongqo, Liyabona Mroqoza, and Makhaola Ndebele, with a script written by David Lee, Darwin Shaw, and Will Hawks. It stands as a shining example of South Africa’s exceptional storytelling and cinematic prowess.
Already having won Best Short Narrative at the 2024 Pan African Film Festival (PAFF), the film’s growing success speaks volumes about its impact and brilliance.
Minister McKenzie expressed confidence that the film will continue to shine on the global stage, eagerly anticipating the Oscar ceremony on March 2, 2025, and hoping for further success.
He extended heartfelt congratulations to the entire cast and crew of The Last Ranger, acknowledging their hard work in elevating South African cinema and keeping the country in the global spotlight. “Let us all unite behind this remarkable production and show our support for local talent,” he said.
