The Outeniqua Choo Tjoe: A Possible Return for an Iconic Steam Train?

27 March 2025 | SANews

The Outeniqua Choo Tjoe, once Africa’s last remaining continuously operated passenger steam train, may soon make a long-awaited return.

The historic railway, which ran along the scenic Garden Route, ceased operations in August 2006 following severe flood damage to the tracks. Since then, efforts have been underway to revive this beloved tourist attraction.

Progress towards restoration gained momentum when Transnet issued a tender on 6 April 2023, inviting bids for the rehabilitation of the Outeniqua Choo Tjoe railway line. Following the evaluation process, an award letter was issued on 28 August 2024. Currently, contract negotiations are in progress, bringing renewed hope that steam-powered nostalgia will once again grace the tracks.

The railway line, stretching 67 kilometers between George and Knysna, is not only a historical and cultural asset but also holds potential economic benefits. Plans for the revived route include the introduction of freight services, particularly for transporting waste and timber, alongside the iconic passenger service.

While no official timeline has been confirmed, the recent developments mark a significant step toward the Choo Tjoe’s comeback. For enthusiasts and local communities alike, the possibility of seeing steam engines return to the Garden Route is an exciting prospect—one that could reignite tourism and economic activity in the region.
