Holiday countdown begins – but is your car as ready as you are for the road ahead?

Can South Africans learn to prepare their vehicles as carefully as they plan their festive breaks? With only eight weeks to go before most families start packing up for their well-earned holidays, now is the time to make sure your vehicle is as ready for the trip as you are, says the Motor Industry Workshop Association (MIWA), a proud association of the Retail Motor Industry Organisation (RMI).

MIWA chairperson, Dewald Ranft, warns that while drivers often take care to rest, plan their routes, and check their phones are charged, none of that will matter if their vehicle lets them down.

“The driver has a huge responsibility behind the wheel - but no amount of driver preparedness can make up for poor vehicle maintenance,” he says. “South African roads are often unsafe and poorly maintained, making it even more important to ensure your car is mechanically sound before you set off.”

Ranft stresses that a professional vehicle inspection should be part of every road trip plan. “Many accidents are caused by poor maintenance. A quick workshop visit before you travel can make all the difference.”

MIWA recommends that the following checks be carried out at an accredited workshop before hitting the road this December:

1.            Insurance and licence disc – Make sure both are up to date and take a moment to review your insurance coverage.
2.            Lights and indicators - Test all lights, including high beams, fog lights, indicators and brake lights.
3.            Brakes - Check for wear, damage or unevenness. Strange noises or vibrations should be inspected immediately by a professional.
4.            Safety equipment - Keep an emergency triangle, tyre repair kit, torch, reflective vest, water and a first-aid kit in the vehicle.
5.            Tyres - Inflate tyres to the manufacturer’s recommended pressure and ensure tread depth meets the legal minimum of 1mm. Don’t forget to check your spare.
6.            Radiator and cooling systems - Watch for fluid leaks or overheating. Green, orange or yellow fluid under your vehicle may indicate a coolant leak that needs urgent attention.
7.            Fluid levels - Check engine oil, coolant, brake fluid, power steering and windshield washer levels. Newer vehicles may display this information electronically, so consult your owner’s manual if unsure. Always keep extra water in the car for emergencies.
8.            Wiper blades and windscreen - Replace worn wipers before the rainy season. Check your windscreen for cracks that could worsen while travelling.
9.            Battery - Ensure connections are secure and voltage levels are healthy. Warning signs like dimming lights or clicking on ignition could indicate a failing battery.
10.         Electronic components - Test air conditioning, radio, GPS and sensors, all of which are critical to vehicle safety and comfort.

“Your vehicle must be able to handle whatever the road throws at it, just as you need to be alert and rested,” says Ranft. “Get your car checked by an accredited workshop well before you leave.”

He adds that safe driving habits are equally essential. “Obey the rules of the road, avoid drinking and driving or texting, don’t speed, and take regular breaks,” he urges. “We wish everyone a safe, stress-free and happy holiday season.”

Sanlam to Sponsor 2026 or 2027 Entries for Cancelled 2025 Cape Town Marathon Entrants

Following the cancellation of the 2025 Sanlam Cape Town Marathon on Sunday morning due to infrastructure and route damage caused by dangerously high winds, title sponsor Sanlam has announced that it will be offering every 2025 marathon entrant a sponsored entry for either May 2026 or 2027.

This offer will be extended to all 2025 marathon entrants, regardless of whether the race succeeds in its bid to become Africa’s first Abbott World Marathon Majors event.

“When faced with adversity, Africans unite. We find a way to create opportunity out of adversity, in spite of all obstacles and challenges,” says the Sanlam Group CEO, Paul Hanratty. “We remain confident that the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon is on course to become an Abbott World Marathon Majors race. Following the disappointment felt by the marathon runners today, we feel that we need to support all of those who were not able to take part in the race.”

The race was cancelled at 4:45am, an hour and a half before the scheduled 6:15am start time, after emergency meetings between the race organising team and the Joint Operations Committee (JOC), which consists of representatives from the City of Cape Town’s Disaster Risk Management and Safety and Security portfolios, as well as medical services and the South African Police Services. Both the route and start/finish venue were deemed unsafe for runners and spectators, and the difficult decision was taken to ensure the safety of everybody at the event.

All 2025 marathon entrants will be eligible for a sponsored entry for the for 2026 or 2027 event. The specifics of this offer, and the entry process that 2025 entrants need to follow, will be announced in due course.

Sanlam has been the title sponsor of the event since 2014 and has played a leading role in the marathon’s rapid growth, while also supporting the event’s candidacy process to become an Abbott World Marathon Majors race. Successfully passing this candidacy assessment would see the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon join the New York, Boston, Berlin, Chicago, Tokyo, Sydney and London Marathons in the Majors.

In reaction to Sanlam’s generous offer, CEO of the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon, Clark Gardner, says, “We have been amazed by the support and understanding from our entrants, sponsors and community after the very difficult decision to cancel our event. This incredibly generous offer from Sanlam exemplifies their commitment to our event, even in our lowest moment. Now we will do our part to ensure the 2025 entrants return to our start line, and enjoy a world class marathon on African soil.”

“We once again apologise to all the disappointed entrants of today’s marathon, and will be making contact with all of them soon with more information about the sponsored entries for the 2026 or 2027 editions of the marathon,” adds Gardner.

The Sanlam Cape Town Marathon team asks runners to please be patient while the details of the sponsored entry process are finalised. The 2026 Sanlam Cape Town Marathon will take place on the 24th of May 2026.
