South African motorists are set for a major shock at the pumps, with petrol and diesel prices jumping sharply from Wednesday, 2 September.
Petrol will rise by R1.34 a litre, while diesel prices will soar by as much as R3.15 a litre.
The steep increases are being driven mainly by rising international oil prices, the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Department said.
Diesel motorists are being hit particularly hard, with global supply constraints pushing prices higher. Russia’s ban on fuel exports has added further pressure to already tight international supplies.
The latest increase is also being driven by a higher retail margin for fuel stations, intended to cover rising wage costs for workers, as well as an increase in the slate levy.
The sharp jump in fuel prices is likely to have a knock-on effect across the economy, with higher transport costs potentially pushing up the prices of food, goods and other services.
For motorists already feeling the pinch, filling up is about to get considerably more expensive.
