The Electoral Commission has confirmed that 136 790 candidates have met the requirements to contest South Africa’s local government elections on 4 November.
Of the candidates, 98 219 were nominated by political parties for ward seats, while 38 571 were nominated for Proportional Representation seats. A further 621 candidates are contesting wards as independents.
The candidates will contest 10 526 seats across the country’s eight metropolitan, 44 district and 205 local municipalities.
The number of candidates is significantly higher than the 95 427 certified for the 2021 municipal elections, despite only a marginal increase in the number of available seats.
IEC Chief Electoral Officer Sy Mamabolo says 84% of nominations were submitted online, with the remaining 16% submitted manually.
The IEC disqualified 5 096 candidates following statutory checks, including verification of nominations and payment of required deposits.
The Commission is expected to publish the full list of candidates and political parties contesting the elections later today.
