KwaZulu-Natal’s MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, has expressed condolences to the families of two pilots who died in separate light aircraft crashes near Nottingham Road and north of Boston.
According to the South African Civil Aviation Authority’s Accidents and Incidents Investigations Division, both aircraft departed in loose formation from Secunda Airport, heading to Margate Regional Airport, when they went down.
Duma said his office will remain in close contact with the families and offer assistance where possible to help ease their burden. He also confirmed that arrangements are underway to repatriate the remains of one of the pilots, who was from India.
The MEC paid tribute to the Aeronautical Search and Rescue Co-ordination Centre, SAPS, and other emergency teams from government and the private sector for their professionalism during the recovery operation.
He said the teams worked efficiently despite challenging terrain and poor weather, with helicopter and drone support helping to locate and retrieve the bodies for investigation and identification.
Duma also commended the media for their respectful coverage of the tragedy, noting their professionalism and adherence to protocols surrounding the handling of the remains.
