The repair of critical infrastructure in the Garden Route is set to accelerate after R26 million in Municipal Disaster Response Grant funding was allocated to five local municipalities following the severe weather events in May.
Oudtshoorn, Knysna, Bitou and George will each receive R5 million, while Kannaland will receive R6 million.
The funding will support emergency repairs, including damaged roads in Bitou and Oudtshoorn, repairs to the main water supply line between the Haarlem Dam and Uniondale in George, and repairs to a main access bridge in Calitzdorp and a transformer in Ladismith.
In Knysna, the funding will be used for slope remediation and repairs to Fedricks Street.
The National Disaster Management Centre says the funding must be spent within six months. More projects will also be considered under the National Disaster Rehabilitation Grant, which is expected to be presented to Cabinet later this month.
The R213.4 million emergency fund was allocated nationally to three provinces following the May floods, with the Western Cape receiving R71.4 million.
Municipalities will now report on project readiness and progress, while the Garden Route District Municipality will assist with monitoring and oversight of the funds.
