The Huguenot Tunnel will remain closed for at least another week while the South African National Roads Agency (Sanral) repairs severe structural damage.
The damage was caused by an incident on Friday night when a bus travelling from Mthatha to Cape Town caught fire inside the tunnel.
Captain FC van Wyk, provincial police spokesperson, said the incident occurred at 23:18 when the bus entered the tunnel on the N1. The bus caught fire and came to a stop inside.
All passengers managed to exit the bus in time, and only one person sustained minor injuries.
The tunnel’s control vehicles and fire department extinguished the blaze, but the bus was completely destroyed.
