The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) has commended swift responses in four separate incidents over the weekend.
In Gordon’s Bay on Sunday, 27 July, NSRI crew rescued five fishermen after their boat suffered mechanical failure and began taking on water offshore of Strand. The vessel was towed safely to harbour.
Two days earlier, on Friday, 25 July, NSRI Gordon’s Bay assisted two sailors after their yacht ran aground near the harbour. Damage to the rudder left the vessel unable to navigate, and it was later towed to safety.
Also on Friday, NSRI Hermanus assisted a 54-year-old kite boarder on the Klein River Lagoon after she was unable to relaunch her kite. A Good Samaritan in a kayak helped keep her safe until rescue crews arrived.
Late Friday night, NSRI Richards Bay responded to a local yacht with seven crew battling rough seas and engine failure 15 nautical miles north of the port. The vessel was towed to the Zululand Yacht Club without incident.
